The most-duped designer fragrances
We note-matched 152 of the most-wanted designer and niche fragrances to the closest affordable dupe for each, then looked at what the whole set has in common. The average dupe reproduces 82% of its original's key notes for 78% less money. But the more useful findings are about where a dupe wins and loses. Dupes nail the loud opening and heart almost perfectly, saffron carries over in 100% of the scents it appears in, while the quiet, costly base is the first thing to go: white musk is dropped 88% of the time. And counter to what you would expect, the pricier the original, the better the deal. Here is what the data shows, with the open dataset behind it.
Buy all 152 originals and you would spend $29,941. The closest dupes for the same 152 scents come to $5,076, a total saving of $24,865.
What dupes reproduce, and what they lose
A dupe shares a scent's key notes; it is never an identical copy. The data shows exactly where the gap falls. Across all 152 originals, we counted how often the closest dupe carries each note over. The pattern is consistent: the loud, synthetic-friendly notes that define a fragrance's first impression reproduce almost perfectly, while the subtle, expensive base notes, the skin-musks, leathers and irises that make a scent feel costly, are the first thing a dupe gives up.
It is why a good dupe can smell spot-on for the first hour and drift on the dry-down: you keep the signature, you lose some of the quiet luxury underneath. Every dupe page on Dupejoy lists these dropped notes openly, so you know what you are giving up before you buy. Share of notes kept, among notes appearing in at least 5 of the 152 fragrances.
The pricier the original, the better the deal
You might expect a $400-plus niche fragrance to be harder to copy than a $120 designer. The opposite holds. Grouped by the original's price, dupes of the most expensive scents match slightly closer and save far more. The dupe market is most worth it exactly where the originals hurt most.

How dupe-able a scent is barely depends on its family: woody originals match 84% on average and amber 82%, a spread of just 2 points. A faithful dupe is about the notes, not the category.

How we built this
These figures are drawn from the Dupejoy database of 152 designer and niche fragrances and their closest dupes, 222 dupes in total. Each pairing is scored by hand, not by a black-box algorithm: we read the original's note pyramid against the dupe house's own published pyramid, the "inspired by" catalogues and product pages from Lattafa, Dossier, ALT, Zara and the rest, and the note-match percentage reflects how much of the original's key signature those shared notes reproduce. We only publish a pairing backed by real shared notes, at 60% or higher, and we record the original's notes the dupe does not carry, the honest gap the two findings above are built on. We never scrape another brand's proprietary data and never invent a note to force a match. Prices are typical full-bottle prices and move over time; a dupe shares the key notes that make a fragrance recognisable but is not an identical copy, and the finest details of the dry-down and longevity can differ.
